Getting Back on Track
One Healthy Choice at a Time
By Susan Hoyle, INHC
The Fourth of July has come and gone.
Maybe your weekend was filled with backyard barbecues, homemade desserts, evenings at the lake, or simply making memories with family and friends.
Maybe you ate foods you don’t normally eat.
Maybe you enjoyed an extra dessert.
Maybe your workouts didn’t happen.
Maybe you stayed up later than usual.
And if you’re like so many people, Monday morning arrives with a familiar thought…
“I need to get back on track.”
If that’s you today, I’d like to offer a different perspective.
You don’t need to start over.
You simply need to make your next healthy choice.
Health Was Never Meant to Be Perfect
One holiday weekend doesn’t erase months of healthy choices.
Just as one healthy salad doesn’t suddenly transform our health, one weekend of celebration doesn’t undo it either.
Our bodies are incredibly resilient. They respond to what we do consistently—not what we do occasionally.
That’s why I encourage my patients to let go of the all-or-nothing mindset.
You haven’t failed.
You don’t need to punish yourself.
You don’t need a cleanse.
You simply need to return to the habits that help you feel your best.
The Next Choice Matters More Than the Last One
Instead of focusing on what you ate yesterday…
Focus on what you can do today.
Your next choice might be:
💧 Drink a glass of water before your morning coffee.
🥗 Fill half your plate with colorful vegetables.
🚶 Take a walk after dinner.
😴 Go to bed a little earlier tonight.
🙏 Spend five quiet minutes in prayer, gratitude, or simply being still.
One healthy choice may not seem like much.
But one healthy choice leads to another.
And before long, you’re right back where you wanted to be—not because you were perfect, but because you kept choosing to care for yourself.
Be the Tortoise
Do you remember the story of The Tortoise and the Hare?
The hare was fast, ambitious, and wanted to win the race quickly.
The tortoise wasn’t flashy. He simply kept moving forward.
When it comes to our health, we often try to be the hare.
We jump into the newest diet.
We promise ourselves we’ll exercise every day.
We decide to eliminate sugar forever.
We expect dramatic results overnight.
But when life gets busy—or a holiday weekend rolls around—we feel discouraged because we’ve slipped off course.
The tortoise teaches us a much better lesson.
Lasting wellness isn’t built by doing everything perfectly. It’s built by making one healthy choice… then another… then another.
One glass of water.
One nourishing meal.
One walk.
One good night’s sleep.
One moment of prayer.
Those ordinary choices may not seem exciting in the moment, but over weeks, months, and years they become extraordinary results.
Slow isn’t failing.
Slow is sustainable.
And sustainable habits almost always win the race.
Progress Isn’t About Willpower
One of the biggest misconceptions about wellness is that healthy people simply have more discipline.
In reality, lasting wellness isn’t built on willpower.
It’s built on routines.
It’s built on grace.
It’s built on showing up again tomorrow.
When we stop chasing perfection, we make room for consistency.
And consistency will always outperform perfection.
Come Home to Your Healthy Habits
I like to think of it this way…
You’re not getting “back on track.”
You’re simply returning to the habits that help you feel your best.
Returning to foods that nourish your body.
Returning to movement that gives you energy.
Returning to restful sleep.
Returning to a quieter mind and a grateful heart.
That’s where true wellness begins.
Not with guilt.
Not with punishment.
Not with another promise that “this time will be different.”
Just one healthy choice…
Followed by another.
And another.
A Gentle Invitation
As you begin this new week, don’t ask yourself…
“How do I fix everything?”
Instead, ask yourself…
“What’s the next loving choice I can make for my body?”
Your body doesn’t need perfection.
It needs consistency.
Because lasting wellness isn’t found in dramatic overhauls.
It’s found in the quiet, everyday decisions we make.
One healthy choice at a time.

When it comes to your health, be the tortoise.
You don’t have to start over. You simply have to take the next step. One healthy choice at a time.
