MTHFR Made Simple
You may have heard of MTHFR — it’s a gene that helps your body activate folate (vitamin B9) so your cells can use it for energy, detoxification, and repair.
When there’s a variation (often called a mutation) in this gene, your body struggles to convert folic acid (the synthetic form found in most vitamins and fortified foods) into the active form called methylfolate.
There are two common MTHFR variants:
C677T – affects how efficiently folate is converted
A1298C – impacts detoxification and neurotransmitter balance
Many people have one or both of these variants. I’m heterozygous for both, meaning my body doesn’t convert folate or detox quite as efficiently — but not as severely as if I had two copies of the same one.
When this pathway slows down, it can show up as:
